Business has been brisk at Drive EV Taupō since the electric vehicle dealership opened in
Tuwharetoa St almost two years ago. “Right from the start we made the decision to only sell
electric vehicles” says Steve Greenwood, Director of Drive EV. “There’s been huge growth in
the New Zealand market, and we wanted to be seen as an expert in this space.”
The decision to focus solely on electric vehicles has paid off, and Drive EV now sells to
customers right across the North Island. “Our first customers were early adopters who were
interested in new technology and prepared to take risks. However now our customer base is
really broad – families love cars like the Nissan Leaf and we’re getting some great feedback
about the latest Renault Zoe.”
Drive EV chooses to personally deliver cars to buyers, who are based across the North
Island. “There are a few things to learn about using an electric vehicle, and we want our
customers to feel really confident and have a great experience with their new car. For us it’s
about the big picture of supporting the electric vehicle movement. It’s not just about
handing over the keys and walking away. We’ve recently hired a new staff member so we
can continue to deliver our cars in-person” says Steve.
As foot traffic can slow down in the winter months, Steve has found value in investing in his
online business. “Although people like to come and have a look at the cars, we sell a lot
through email, phone calls and our website. Online marketing is really important for a
business like ours. After-sales service has also been a key point of difference. We want to
make sure our customers continue to enjoy driving electric in the future.”
Living in Taupō has been a good choice for Steve and his business, due to its central location
for distribution. “Our customers are from places like Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, and
Whangarei, so it’s great to be based in the middle of the North Island. We’re pretty lucky
living here. From the office we have a view right across the lake to the mountains - the
scenery is incredible. It’s a nice pace of life too. In summer there’s lots happening and Taupō
fills up with visitors, then in the winter things quieten down and there’s a nice small-town
feel to the place.”
