Cheal's Geospatial Revolution: Mapping Taupō's Economic Future

A quiet revolution is unfolding at Cheal, a local engineering, surveying and planning firm that's putting the Taupō district on the map – quite literally. With a bold step into cutting-edge geospatial technology, Cheal isn't just transforming its business; it's redefining Taupō's landscape.

From Survey to Spatial: A Journey of Innovation

Cheal's geospatial journey started in 2010 when they began investing in new geospatial technology; but it wasn't until September 2023 that the leap was made to form a dedicated geospatial division, allowing the team to be more specialised by focusing on these technologies.  As Gisela Ripoll, Geospatial Lead, puts it, "This department has set a new path for some team members, and it's very rewarding, seeing how much they have grown over the last year." This move has opened new doors for the company and its staff along with an additional income stream.

Investing in Geospatial technology was a work in progress over some years.  Initially proposed to Cheal’s Board of Directors, the development of the specialised Geospatial team aligned with the companies Strategic Plan.  The Board wanted to develop something new to grow the business, diversify and importantly to set them apart from their competitors.  Investment into the new technology was a risk for Cheal, largely due to the significant financial investment required; but by recognising this is a way forward in the industry they are now front runners in their field.

Tech That's Turning Heads

The GeoSpatial team uses advanced technologies that set Cheal apart from competitors. Among these are laser scanning tools capable of capturing detailed 3D data with millimeter-level accuracy and laser trackers that ensure precise alignment with an accuracy ranging from 0.009 to 0.039mm, depending on the measurement distance.  Additionally, drones equipped with interchangeable sensors are utilised for aerial mapping and infrastructure assessments, and gaining CAA Certification under part 102 enables greater service offerings in the UAV space.

These innovative technologies allow Cheal to offer unique services that deliver substantial benefits to clients, including increased efficiency, enhanced safety, and significant cost savings. By staying ahead of technological advancements, Cheal confidently provides clients with solutions that other firms may not offer.

Economic Impact on Taupō

Establishing the GeoSpatial team is more than a business strategy; it is an asset for Taupō’s economy. By servicing large geothermal companies and attracting skilled professionals, Cheal elevates the region's profile in the GeoSpatial industry and allows these large companies to employ this technology locally instead of outsourcing to other companies outside of the district.  Gisela proudly notes, “We’re punching above our weight - producing great work that is seen by companies outside of the district.” As a company, Cheal brings skilled talent to the region (they have recently brought on a new team member from the UK) and this influx of talent strengthens Cheal and enriches the local workforce by placing a focus on upskilling existing team members.

Growing Together

At Cheal, growth isn't just about technology; it's about people. They invest heavily in their team, offering leadership training and encouraging networking.  Being proactive about building relationships and collaboration are cornerstones of Cheal's strategy. By engaging with industry peers and participating in organisations like Survey and Spatial New Zealand, the International Metrology Society and UAV NZ, the team ensures they stay informed about best practices and emerging trends, ensuring they remain competitive in a dynamic and ever-changing market.

The Future is Bright (and Precisely Mapped)

Cheal's success is built on a foundation of excellence, respect, and community commitment. Operating in Taupō, the importance of accountability in every project is a key focus, driving them to approach their work with integrity and dedication.

Building and maintaining trust with their clients is essential, and the team achieves this by being transparent, relatable and dedicated. The mix of accountability, respect, safety, quality, and continuous improvement is what truly sets the Cheal team apart.

As Taupō continues to grow, companies like Cheal are at the forefront, showing that Taupō businesses can compete on a global stage. With their bold moves into geospatial technology, Cheal is not just mapping the land – they're playing a part in mapping out the future of the region's economic growth and prosperity.

In a world where staying ahead of the curve is crucial, Cheal stands as a shining example of how local businesses can drive innovation and growth. As they continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in the geospatial field, one thing is clear: Taupō's future is looking precisely bright.
